Know Your Voting Rights
It is important to know that being homeless does not mean you cannot vote. Everyone has the right to vote provided you meet age, citizenship, and other eligibility requirements.
YOU DON’T NEED A HOME ADDRESS TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN CALIFORNIA!
1. You can vote in California if you are a convicted felon as long as you have finished your time in state or federal prison – ex-offenders should re-register to vote.
2. You can vote if you are in jail, or have been released, for a misdemeanor. Misdemeanors do not disqualify you from voting.
3. If your are registering to vote for the 1st time in CA/Sacramento – you must provide a valid ID or provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. There are 30 acceptable forms of ID in CA. To learn about which ID’s work visit: www.sos.ca.gov/elections
4. If you are already registered, but you have moved since the last election, changed your name, or changed your political party, you must re-register.
5. If you just moved to the state, California has a 15 day residency requirement
Common questions:
- Do you have to be 18 to register to vote? No, you can register at 17, as long as you are 18 on or before election day.
- Do I have to be able to read and/or write English to vote? No, you can take a english proficient registered voter into the polling booth with you — but they can not vote for you.
- Does it cost anything to register to vote? No, it is free.
- Do I have to choose a political party to register to vote? No, you can pick “decline to state.”
- I am a survivor of domestic violence, can I keep my address confidential? Yes, California has Safe at Home Program
